After Beeps - Spring 2008

Picture
Source: words and music by Mary Donelly, arranged by George L. O. Strid
Published: Shawnee Press, EA132

Theme: "A comic choral suite of telephone answering machine messages."
Musical Value: this is an easy introduction to singing in two parts

Texture: 2 part treble voices with piano accompaniment (also available SATB and SAB)
Vocal Range:

Various meters, time signatures and tempos.
Performance time: 4:55'

Social Historical: From back in the day when people had answering machines, not cell phones for continuous contact!

Notes: The work begins and ends with original music.  The variations on what kind of message to leave on your machine are folk-songs, e.g. My Bonnie Lies Over the Ocean, For He's a Jolly Good Fellow, O Where, O Where has my Little Dog Gone.

Words:
This is an example of one of the verses:

to the tune of For He's a Jolly Good Fellow:
I just got into the bath tub,
I just got into the bath tub,
I just got into the bath tub,
So I can't come to the phone.

But I will call you back (right back)
After I scrub my back (my back)
So leave your name and your number,
When you hear the tone!  (Beep!)
